Our Trip to William's Den

On Friday 6th March, we all went to William's Den in East Yorkshire for an amazing day exploring large equipment in and outside. Using social stories, photographs and symbols, we made sure we were prepared for our visit. The children engaged with new sensory experiences inside such as a large treehouse and a slide going into a sand pit. Then outside, the children loved the big swing, zipwire and building wooden dens. We got compliments from another parent at William's Den, about our respectful and kind children. All the staff were very proud and we look forward to another trip next year.

Our sensory focus this term has been, 'Where are you going?' We followed the journey of Barnaby as he got lost in the woods when he felt unloved. We also watched 'The Gingerbread Man' run and be chased by different characters. Outside we have been going on journeys around school and the playground, using our senses to explore winter.

Activities in Provision

In Provision we have spent the last few weeks learning about the origins of Christmas and The Nativity, when many Christians believe a special baby was born. We have also been encouraging the children to explore, using their senses, some of the different ways other people celebrate Christmas. We have made Hot Chocolate; decorated tree biscuit's with icing and sprinkles; met Santa; read stories and sang songs. The children and staff have had a wonderfully festive time!

Our sensory focus this term was 'What can I hear?'. We watched firework displays, safely online, which made lots of different sounds. We encouraged the children to show us the sounds they had heard, using symbols, words or instruments. We then made firework pictures using glue and a lot of glitter.

Next we read 'Room on the Broom' and made our own characters from the book. The children were very excited to fly on the broomstick, repeating refrains from the story.

Finally we focused on winter and how trees change when it gets colder. We used more glitter and paint to add snow to tree stumps.

Activities in Provision

At the end of summer, we invited parents to join us for a 'Treasure Hunt' and picnic. There were presents for everyone at the end of our hunt and lots of surprises too. Sadly, the weather stopped us eating outside, but we have enjoyed exploring the new playground equipment together when the sun has shone.
