Today we had a special guest leading our whole school assembly about Diwali. Larinda is a member of the Sikh religion, and he told us all about Guru Hargobind Sahib and Emperor Jahangir who were great friends and Chanda who was jealous of their friendship. Chanda had the Guru arrested! The Sikh followers were not happy and protested this. The Emperor was released and the Guru apologised for Chanda's actions, but the Guru would not leave because there were other innocent prisoners in the palace. They were then also allowed to leave as long as they could hold the Guru's cloak. That day the Guru saved all of the prisoners and on that day, it was Diwali. We learnt that Diwali celebrates good overcoming evil and light overcoming darkness. Diwali is celebrated in Sikh, Hindu and Jain faiths as well as by some Buddhists.
